I haven’t yet had the privilege of breastfeeding beyond a year. My views on the topic are quite mixed really. I want to let P2 wean off of me in her own time, I hate the thought of her being unhappy and needing me, but for me to refuse her my boob. But at the same time I can’t quite imagine feeding a toddler. We’ll see.
The main support I’ve had from my breastfeeding journey so far was from my wonderful Mother In Law. I’ve asked her to write about her breastfeeding journey as she did breastfeeding beyond a year.
“I’m a 46 year old mother of 2 gorgeous sons. One is 23 years old and one is 2 years 8 months… Yes, you read that correctly! I breastfed my first son for 6 months (as I had to return to work for 3 months to fulfill a contract) and my second son I fed for 20 months.
Whilst pregnant at 44 (being an older mother) I remember a doctor telling me I have to remember my body fell pregnant naturally and was happy to have this baby. How right he was, as my body proved this by providing me with enough milk to feed my second son for 20 months. It was me who decided to stop because my breast was becoming a comforter. I am very FOR breast feeding as I truly believe it was because of my milk that neither of my sons suffered with illness as a baby, if a cold or virus came along it was very mild.
The feelings you get when feeding are hard to put into words, the way you feel about the most precious gift you will ever get in life. Sitting in a darkened room with your baby suckling is a moment only you and your baby will share. It’s emotional, I used to shed a few tears because you feel like your heart could burst because you love this little person so much and want to protect and care for them. For me it brought back the same feelings I’d experienced 23 years earlier. I’m privileged to say our bond is beyond words, my older son has been and always will be my rock. Is this because of breast feeding? Who knows but it had to start somewhere.
I loved breast feeding. I never worried about feeding in public, it’s not like you’re getting your breasts out for all to see. I remember feeding my first born with a shawl round me and I attracted more attention because of the shawl. I did use nursing rooms when available. I expressed milk as well. Some women are unable to breastfeed for numerous reasons and I feel very lucky that I was able to breastfeed both my sons.”
